Redshank
“Tringa totanus”


This member of the sandpipers snipes and phalaropes family gets its name from its bright orange/red legs.
It has a brown speckled back and wings and is pale underneath. It has an orange base to its beak.
They eat insects, molluscs, crustaceans and worms using its bill by probing in the mud to extract its food.
They are 28cm in length
They have a wingspan of 62cm
They weigh in at between 110g for a male
and 130g for a female.
There are only 25,000 pairs breeding in the uk.
They can be seen all year round.
They are amber listed
They live for around 4 years.
