"Streptopelia decaocto"

This is a lovely Pigeon that is often heard before it is seen. Its distinctive "cooing" call can be most annoying! It is buff coloured with dark grey wingtips and a black collar. It is found in every county in the uk . That's remarkable because it was unknown in 1950

It feeds on seeds and grain. It is between 33 and 35cm in length and has a wingspan of 51cm. It weighs in at 200g. The average lifespan is just 3 years. Its a regular visitor to our gardens all year.
